Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES)

In six months’ time, on 1 April 2020, minimum energy efficiency standards will apply to existing domestic tenancies as well as new tenancies.

EPC energy efficiency rating

These minimum energy efficiency standards mean that you cannot rent out a property below an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E. This applied for all new tenancies (including renewing or extending) from April 2018 and will apply for existing domestic tenancies from April 2020, and existing non-domestic tenancies from April 2023.

You can check the EPC rating of your house here. The certificate will also give recommendations of measures you can install to improve the rating, which will make the house warmer and energy bills cheaper.

If you’re a tenant who needs advice on your rights and responsibilities around energy issues or landlord who needs advice on energy efficiency improvements and funding options, please give us a call on 0800 804 8601.
