Green Deal Communities Southampton

Southampton City Council in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, Gosport Borough Council and Eastleigh Borough Council successfully applied to the Green Deal Communities scheme managed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Grant funding was available for local authorities and their partners to encourage the installation of external wall insulation and other energy efficiency improvements in privately owned homes.

We worked closely with the Council to identify areas within the city that could benefit from home energy improvements, engage with households. We also acted as the main point of contact for those involved in the scheme.

In total 173 Southampton households benefited from:

  • 115 heating system upgrades, cavity wall and loft insulation measures; and
  • 65 external wall insulation measures

On average, households that installed external wall insulation will benefit from a lifetime cost saving of £7,861 and a lifetime carbon saving of 25TCO2.

Results from customer surveys show the main reasons for going ahead with work were the potential energy bill savings and increased comfort in the home. In addition, 62% of customers wouldn’t have undertaken the work without the grant funding available. This increased to 82% for customers who went ahead with external wall insulation work.

The value of work exceeded £883,237 with £604,688 accessed from Green Deal Communities, Energy Company Obligation and other grant funding. The remaining balance was covered by customer contributions.
